I once heard the mother of an autistic child describe her life as “having my heart broken every day.” As the dad of a 9-year-old autistic boy, I find the latest calls for “mandate relief” have a familiar and disturbing ring. And, yes, they are a little heartbreaking. Sure, it’s asking a lot for most people to recognize this incurable condition. It’s easy to mistake an autistic child’s uncontrolled “tantrum,” retreat to a corner, or repetitive motions for just a behavior problem. But it seems to be even harder for many people to comprehend why taking services away from innocent children and their families is so devastating.

Josephine, a Nassau County parent who requested that her last name not be mentioned, felt her school district wasn’t meeting the needs of her daughter, now 15, who has an autism spectrum disorder and was getting bullied in school. Over a period of a year and a half, Josephine attended half a dozen meetings with the district. After getting nowhere, she hired an attorney, who within four months negotiated a placement for her daughter outside the district in a private, special needs school.
