California residents formed the For the Flag We Stand coalition on Wednesday, July 9, 2014, to protest the California Coastal Commission’s recent proposal to remove a 400-square-foot American flag dedicated to veterans waving over the Trump National Golf Club for being too big. Even though the flag was approved by a majority vote in Rancho Palos Verdes City Council over 7 years ago and has remained untouched since, the Coastal Commission claimed the flag is in violation of local regulations that limit accessory structures to 16 feet.

Although Coastal Commission staff recommended lowering the flagpole to 26 feet and moving it closer to the clubhouse, the commissioners decided they would be OK with the flagpole’s current height and location at the 240-acre golf course if the City Council revised its Local Coastal Plan, which sets guidelines for development along the coast.

All made possible by an effective grassroots campaign that successfully convinced the commission to keep the flag flying.
